Zoomer here: How were older gens of people different when it came to gaming? (2025)

For a series of circumstances (Such as being born in Brazil), there was no way for me to have played those as a kid outside of an emulator, and ePSXe had a bug where the cursor and health bars wouldn't appear in FF7 (Still does, BTW, you had to select an option to fix it... but it still has more bugs, so just be a smart person and use Duckstation instead).

There are plenty of emulators to choose from.

I mean, I just told in the original post that I DID beat FF7 in 2023.

Notice I said them, meaning more than one. You said you didn't beat Ocarina yet.

If you get your hands on a 3DS, I recommend that version, as the graphics are much better. Or you could emulate it, although you would miss out on the holographic feature of the 3DS. Plus the handheld setting is pretty fun. I loved playing it with headphones while lying in bed.

I found it underwhelming because:
Most of the game can be beaten with just normal attacks, with no reason to use spells.

That's techically true of countless other games. Just because you can do it the boring way doesn't mean you have to. Magic is more effective against many enemies and is useful in myriad other ways, such as healing and protection.

Most interesting materia combinations are locked in the late game.

Do you mean you have to wait until later to get the best stuff and do the most exciting things? That's also true of countless other games.

You end up overleveled without even trying, making the game very easy

I did cover that beating the main story isn't all there is to it.

I think its "ease of entry" is part of what made it so popular. If it was super hard from the beginning, far fewer people would have played it. There's ample content for the hardcore players, with many challenging things to do.

Imagine if someone called mathematics underwhelming because it started off with addition and subtraction, without being aware of the existence of calculus.

(And that's not mentioning things like Blue Magic, which I didn't use, but would've made the entire game A JOKE).

I assume you mean the enemy skills you can learn. I enjoyed those. (Some were hard to acquire.) How would they make the game a joke? Most are weaker than standard summons.

The story is a bit of a mess (The plotlines of Jenova, Sephiroth, Shinra and Materia just don't interact with one another very well.

I think it's a masterpiece and don't agree with your assessment, but to each their own.

I can't think of another story in a game that impacted me more than FF7.

I have no idea why people glaze Sephiroth when it's Jenova controlling his body for most of the game.

It did show flashbacks with the real Sephiroth, along with the aftermath. The fact that she controlled him doesn't make him any less of a noteworthy character. He's one of the greatest villains of all time.

Side note: the 3DCG anime film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is awesome. It's a sequel to the game and has an epic battle between Cloud and Sephiroth near the end. There are two versions of the movie. The original version has a better soundtrack (in my opinion) while the Complete version has additional scenes.

I also have no idea why Cloud gets depressed for not being a supersoldier... even though he's been a supersoldier for the entire game).

He was living a lie, claiming he joined SOLDIER First Class, while in reality he didn't even qualify to become a lower class member. He was also depressed for various other reasons. You did not pay attention. The fact that he later became a strong fighter in general is irrelevant.

The problem is that then there's nowhere for you to use those (Or for you to NEED to use those).

Not at all. Emerald and Ruby Weapon are superbosses that are hard to beat. There are so many other things to do too, including breeding a gold chocobo and obtaining rare items, which requires a high degree of dedication.

Now you can see it was a mistake to assume you knew so much about this game.

I tried the original Castlevania and didn't like it, it's just not fun your character being a giant damage magnet, and let's not talk about stuff such as Megaman where I could REALLY feel the lack of a "Wile E. Coyote effect".
I liked Kirby's Adventure, though.
It was fun and beautiful.

There are many thousands of games out there, so I would urge you to explore more of them if you're so inclined.

Can you tell me more about your experience? Why do you think it's that good compared to every other game?

I'm not a reviewer. :P I could write for hours about it, but have little interest in doing so. Just read (or watch) reviews if you want that perspective.

Borderlands (FPS with RPG elements) is my current favorite game franchise, but I still play the Final Fantasy games. I started replaying FF4 not long ago, with an authentic original Super Nintendo controller and USB adapter on my desktop PC.

Since you're into emulators, I hope you use a controller for simpler games. It kills your hands to constantly use a keyboard. (Especially holding the arrow keys.)

I highly recommend FF9 if you've never played it. It's on Steam for PC now.
